15.  But Kennedy had none of that experience…  yet

16.  Kennedy was different, he was 43 years old and father to two young children: Caroline & John Jr.  There was a difference

23.  In September 1962 a U2 spy plane taking photographs over Cuba discovered that the Soviet Union had begun building Missile launching sites.

24.  Cuba is only 90 miles from the southern tip of Florida, these Missile sites brought nuclear weapons dangerously close to America.

26.  The U2 could take very clear photographs while moving quickly and at great altitudes, often as high up as 70,000 feet

47.  They decide their best chance to avoid World War III is to blockade any ships from coming to Cuba, thereby denying any more missiles, or equipment from getting to the missile sites.  They did not do anything about the missiles already there.

48.  Since a Naval Blockade is officially an act of war, they call it a “Quarantine”

50.  Kennedy then goes on Television to address the nation and tell them about the missiles and the steps he will take to get them removed.

60.  A letter arrives from Khrushchev offering a way out if the United States promised never to invade Cuba.

61.  The next day, another, angrier letter from Khrushchev arrived with additional demands.  He demanded the United States remove missile bases from Turkey.
