The Tabernacle March 29, 2015 San Angelo, Tx

Hebrews 9:23-24 Therefore it was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us

Did you know? Did you know that Moses received the 10 Commandments from God at Mt. Sinai? Well, did you also know that he received the instructions for the tabernacle at the same time? 1 CHAPTER OF THE BOOK OF EXODUS! 14 CHAPTERS OF THE BOOK OF EXODUS!

According to the Pattern Exodus 25:8-9 And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them. 9 According to all that I show you, that is, the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furnishings, just so you shall make it.

Typeology of the Tabernacle A pattern was provided for the worship in the Old Testament The pattern also gave a glimpse of the pattern for the church in the New Testament

A Walk Through the Tabernacle This morning, we would like to take a tour of the tabernacle.

THE TOUR BEGINGS In the outer court, people would bring their animal for a sin offering and deliver it to the priest. The people worshipped God through the priest. Remission of sins was through blood. (Hebrews 9:22)

BRAZEN ALTAR OF BURNT OFFERINGS The priest would slay the animal, and the blood would be placed on the four horns of the brazen altar, as well as being sprinkled on the priests.

BRAZEN ALTAR OF BURNT OFFERINGS The animal would then be burned on the altar. SYMBOLISM: The sacrifice of Jesus Christ on Calvary

John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

THE LAVER Before entering the Holy Place, the priests would wash in the laver. Consecration Daily Washing of hands & feet

Exodus 29:4 And Aaron and his sons you shall bring to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and you shall wash them with water.

THE LAVER Any flesh that touched the priest would be washed in the laver. SYMBOLISM: Baptism

Ephesians 5:25-26 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word

Titus 3:4-7 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

PRIESTLY GARMENTS Once properly washed, the priest would put on his white robes. SYMBOLISM: Righteousness

Revelation 19:8 And to her [bride of the Lamb] it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.

THE HOLY PLACE The priest would then be eligible to enter the holy place through the blue, red, and purple woven linen door.

LOCATION OF FURNITURE Table of ShewbreadNORTH Lampstand/CandlestickSOUTH Altar of IncenseWEST

TABLE OF SHEWBREAD Made of acacia wood, overlaid with gold. 12 loaves of bread The bread was eaten every Sabbath by the priests and then replaced. Why 12 loaves? One for each of the 12 tribes of Israel.

TABLE OF SHEWBREAD SYMBOLISM: Lord’s Supper Q: Why one loaf today and 12 loaves then? A: We no longer are separated by tribe as the Israelites were, but are one people.

Galatians 3:26-29 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

LAMPSTAND 3’ tall, made of one piece of pure gold Weighed approximately 114 pounds, worth over $3 million in today’s money Lamp rather than a candle (oil, not wax)

LAMPSTAND The priest would attend to the lamp, the only source of light in an otherwise dark room. SYMBOLISM: Revelation of God’s word through his son

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Psalms 119:130 The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.

ALTAR OF INCENSE God gave the exact recipe for the incense to be used (only used in tabernacle). Perfectly square in design, with horns (like the brazen altar).

ALTAR OF INCENSE SYMBOLISM: Praise and prayer offered to God

Psalm 141:2 Let my prayer be set before You as incense, The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

Revelation 5:8 Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

HOLY PLACE = CHURCH The Holy Place serves as a picture of the coming church. – Word of God (Lampstand) – Lord’s Supper (Table of Shewbread) – Prayer & Praise (Incense)

MOST HOLY PLACE Once a year, the High Priest was allowed to enter the Holy of Holiest, or Most Holy Place. The High Priest would then enter through the heavy veil that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.

VEIL The veil served as a separation between man and God. SYMBOLISM: Death

Hebrews 10:19-22 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

MOST HOLY PLACE On the Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur, the High Priest would pass through the veil and enter the Most Holy Place.

MOST HOLY PLACE The High Priest would first offer blood for his own sins, and then offer blood for the sins of the people. There was no outside source of light in the Most Holy Place – God provided the light (Shekinah)

Revelation 21:23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.

ARK OF THE COVENANT One piece of furniture – the ark of the covenant topped by the mercy seat. SYMBOLISM: Heaven SYMBOLISM: Throne of God
