1 Introduction In modern age Geographic Information systems (GIS) has emerged as one of the powerful means to efficiently manage and integrate numerous types of information to carry out various activities. One important application is in the development of public transportation route advisor. A city has many important places to visit e.g. institutes; hospital, public places etc. and often people may find it difficult to reach their desired destination. Most of the residents as well as people new to the city are not aware about Public Transportation System that exists with in a city. Keeping this in view “Public Transport Route Advisor” is developed which will suggest shortest as fastest route and all the available buses between the user’s selected Origin-Destination (OD) pair for Lahore. Research Methodology An experimental public transport route advisor is developed successfully in GIS environment using Network Analyst toolbar which facilitates the user to find the optimized route and no. of buses available between user’s interested OD pair. Availability on the world wide web - to bring this system online i-e availability on the World Wide Web to disseminate Public Transport Route Advisor to the maximum users. Calculating all possible routes that connects OD pair - to calculate all possible routes that connect OD pair so that user may know all the available options to travel between the OD pair and may select an appropriate bus route according to his trip requirement. Creating User Friendly Interface - to create a user friendly interface so that a user who has no knowledge of ArcGIS can calculate the optimized route between his interested OD pair. Conclusions TO DEVELOP PUBLIC TRANSPORT ROUTE ADVISOR USING GIS FOR LAHORE CITY Recommendations Step 1: Digitizing The Route Network Bus route Shape files were prepared that were not properly aligned and didn’t have proper nodes at the intersection points. Another major issue was that if two or more than two buses were passing through same road segment then same number of lines were passing through the road, so the selection of the OD pair for user was difficult. To overcome this, line segments were combined and information was put in the attribute table. Hence the whole network was digitized again making common line segments, if more than one bus is passing over a single road (as shown in the figure below). Step 2: Checking data quality by applying topological roles Bus route and the length of the route trend of Lahore Public Transport for year 2010 Bus route and the Number of stops in the route trend of Lahore Public Transport for year 2010 Bus route and the travel time to complete the route trend of Lahore Public Transport for year 2010 Bus route and the No. of Signals in the complete route trend of Lahore Public Transport for year 2010 Step 3: Selection of Network In ArcGIS there are two types of networks available. One is utility network and other one is transportation network. Later was selected to be used in the project because transportation network is un directional by default and attributes can be added in attribute table to make it directional network. Then feature dataset was built using feature class that was free from any errors after applying topological rules. While building the network, length and time were applied as cost parameters on the basis of which optimized route (i.e. shortest as well as fastest route) was calculated. The previously digitized shapefile was imported to feature dataset of a personal geodatabase. After that topological rule (Must Not Have Dangle) was added to the feature dataset. Then the topological rule was applied to identify the dangling nodes present in the network. Nodes that were found to be dangled were corrected manually. Step 5: Getting Available Bus Information In order to facilitate user the whole information of bus stop was stored as a point shapefile. User can select OD pair by applying selection by attribute query. As a result OD pair is highlighted on the map. Then using network analyst tool place marks were placed over the highlighted points. By clicking on the solve button on the network analyst tool the optimized route is highlighted as shown in the following figure. Step 4: Calculating Optimized Route To know the bus route available on the route calculated by the Network Analyst Toolbar, user has to look on the labels, for example the buses available on the route calculated by Network Analyst Tool are New Khan 03, Deawoo 05, Deawoo 10, MAKKS 33, Bashir Hussain 43 and MAKKS 77.
