Example 1: Find the equation of the tangent to f (x) = x 2 + 2x – 3 at x = –1 Solution Point of tangency is f (–1) = (–1)2 + 2(–1) – 3= – 4 → (– 1, – 4) (–1, –4) Slope of tangent = f ' (x) = 2x + 2 Slope of tangent at x = –1→ f ' (–1) = 2(–1)+ 2 = 0 – 4 = 0(–1) + b b = – 4 y = – 4
