Goals To enable family medicine residents become competent in counseling women to choose breastfeeding and to manage breastfeeding difficulties.

Needs Assessment Interviews with mothers show that resident doctors are not discussing breastfeeding with their patients Will further assess learner needs with a pre- test questionnaire

Objectives are to: At the end of this workshop, residents will be able to : – mention at least two benefits of breastfeeding each to the child, mother, and community – Demonstrate correct positioning and attachment – Exhibit some confidence in breastfeeding counseling – manage lactation and common breastfeeding difficulties

Methods Pretest Questionnaire Lecture- benefits of breastfeeding and practical skills Demonstration (person/video)- practical positioning and attachment skills (individual practice) Lecture- Counseling skills/Common breastfeeding difficulties Role play- counseling and solving common breastfeeding difficulties
