Lunar Eclipse 02-20-08 http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/JLEX/JLEX-NA.html Javascript Lunar Eclipse Explorer NORTH AMERICA, CENTRAL AMERICA & CARIBBEAN Lunar Eclipse dates from -1999 to 3000 http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/LEplot/LEplot2001/LE2008Feb21T.GIF What it May Look Like too! Make sure to check out the last slide for a real rare occurrence.

Difference between the penumbral & total eclipse. It is all about the ecliptic.

Why is the Lunar Eclipse RED?

3D image of the reasons & whys of a lunar eclipse. We (the earth) just get in the way. An earthly shadow effect. CRB: Interesting. Do you know what causes the umbra and penumbra? I didn't know there were two shadows (or at least that’s what it looks like).
6
This is an altered picture. It shows the addition of light from the outside of the sun that explains why the penumbra is a lighter section of the shadow. The farther out from the totally dark umbra, the lighter it gets until it is totally illuminated. CRB: Fascinating. :] I never looked at a shadow in that sense. Thanks. :]

This is a picture was taken in the parking lot of my school so I could show my kids that all shadows have umbra (total eclipse) as well as penumbra (partial eclipse). Can you see them? Umbra Penumbra CRG: I can. :] Our earth science class is terrible at my school.

The shadow of Mauna Kea volcano from July 16, 2000 on our atmosphere. The Moon is inside the/our shadow. The Moon has just emerged from a penumbral lunar eclipse; the Moon is illuminated by sunlight that has passed around the other side of the Earth. The Earth’s Shadow for real! Mauna Kea Volcano, Hawaii

The twin Keck & Subaru telescopes at sunrise on July 16, 2000, immediately after the total lunar eclipse. One can see the shadow on the Earth's atmosphere of Mauna Kea (where these scopes are located). The moon is immediately above the shadow - the Earth's shadow is still evident on the moon.
