9 Textbook Time - Grab a textbook - Turn to page 422 We will read and discuss one page together and answer a few questions + discuss.

10 Chapter 12 Section 2 1)Which state was the first to ban slavery in its Constitution? 2) What was the American Colonization Society’s plan and did it work? Why? They proposed that slaves be freed and sent to Liberia, it did not work, Slaves did not desire to leave.

13 The Underground Railroad The Underground Railroad was a reaction to the rise of slavery in this country. Africans were brutally captured from their homeland, they endured the Middle Passage across the Atlantic Ocean and life as enslaved people in America. Both free and enslaved Africans in America made significant contributions from the very beginning of our country’s history, all through the time in our history when slavery was legal in this country, and have continued contributing to our country’s history today.

14 The Underground Railroad I am going to ask you a series of questions, and I want you to just silently think of the answers on your own. You will have a chance to share with your desk partner. Now put yourself back into that time, and ask yourself these questions and answer them on a sheet of paper….

15 The Underground Railroad What would you do? What would you do about slavery? What would you do? How would you feel about slavery? What would you do? Would you DO anything about it? What would you do? Would you be more successful doing something about it as an individual or as a group? What would you do? Could you DO anything about it?

16 Group Activity Directions: Your team of four (4) will be forming an anti- slavery group during the early 1800s. Please take some time to discuss the following questions, and the recorder of the group will write down the group’s answers after you have reached agreement. YOU ARE ABOLITIONISTS, TRYING TO END SLAVERY

17 Group Activity Directions: You and your group answer these questions on your paper. 1) What are the goals of your group? 2) What will you actually do to reach these goals? 3) Will your group have a name, and if so, what name will you choose and why?
