16 Acceptance Criteria  Temperature specifications have historically been problematic due to a lack of general agreement of the precise meaning of terms and how they define acceptance criteria. RP-16 defines temperature for test acceptance as follows:  Temperature Stability Mean Stability Absolute Stability  Rate of change Number of fluctuations crossing a mean over time  Gradients Change in temperature over distance

17 Test Locations  Room Volume Volume usually defined in distance from walls, ceiling and floor  Workstation Volume Volume of space including instruments and UUT  Instrument Volume Space occupied by a piece of fixed instrumentation alone  Part Volume Measuring volume of an instrument

18 Test Timing  Data sampling interval Rate that data is sampled; once/minute,once/6 minutes  Test Duration Usually 8,24 or 72 hours. Longer tests cost more.

19 Independent Testing System  Independent data logger with connected test sensor array not associated with the lab control system  Testing system should be calibrated as a unit with test sensors connected to data logger  Calibration should be traceable to a National Laboratory or to ITS-90  Total expanded uncertainty of the independent test system should be computed according to NIST Technical Note 1297 current addition

20 Methodology  Ambient Conditions Lab operating in normal condition without people. A heat load can be simulated to reflect occupancy.  Test Sensor Quantity and Locations The number of sensors should be based on the lab size and functionality of the lab. Sensor locations should be based on functionality of the lab. When testing room volume the volume is usually defined as 24” AFF, 18” below ceiling and 12” from wall.

21 Methodology continued  Lab Recovery Test The lab recovery test is conducted to demonstrate the time a lab recovers during out of tolerance conditions The lab temperature is manually controlled one or two degrees above and below set point. The control system is enabled to automatic for each test. The test system logs the time required to return to specification for each test

22 Design for Success  Temperature Specification Set Point - 20° C Stability - ± 0.01° C per hour - ± 0.1° C per 12 hours - ± 0.1° C per 24 hours  Gradients.1° C/meter vertical and horizontal

30 Acceptance Criteria  Gradient Acceptance The difference in value of the mean value of each pair of sensors compared must be equal to or less than 0.1° C. in a 24 hour period.  Stability Acceptance Mean sensor value must be equal to or less than 0.01° C. per hour and equal to or less than 0.1° C. in a 24 hour period.

31 Conclusion RP-16 was conceived to provide the metrology community guidance for testing laboratories. It can be used as effective tool for “Design for Success”.
