V3-4, 1st temptation – lust of the flesh - change stones to bread - temptation: act independently of God 2. v5-7, 2nd temptation – boastful pride of life - jump off pinnacle of temple - temptation: act presumptuously 3. v8-11. 3rd temptation – lust of the eyes - world kingdoms in exchange for worship of Satan - temptation: use Satan’s shortcut 4. 1 Pet 5:8- like roaring lion, seeks to devour, uses persecution 5. God permitted the attack (s. Matt4:1 cf. Rom8:28-29) Our Victory: assured 1. Col 2:15 – Satan disarmed & defeated at the Cross 2. 1 John 4:4 – God is greater 3. Stand firm, therefore i) having girded your loins with truth. ii) having put on the breastplate of righteousness iii) having stood your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace iv) taking up the shield of faith -able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one v) take the helmet of salvation vi) take the sword of the Spirit – the Word(rhēma) of God vii) with all prayer & petition - pray at all times in the Spirit - be alert with all perseverance & petition for all the saints - pray for [gospel preachers] to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, to speak boldly as they ought to speak 4.
