ROPE R – Restate O – Organize P – Prove E – Expand and Explain

Why ROPE? ROPE is an acronym we use to standardize our problem solving procedure. We use this procedure to answer ECR questions (extended construction response). We do this so that we remember to answer all parts of the question, and so we do it in a way that will ENSURE that we get the credit we deserve.

Getting Set Up _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ Sandy is in 2 nd grade and is just learning how to add two big numbers together. She has to add 4,586 and 973. Do the addition problem for Sandy, clearly showing your work so that she can see it. What is the correct answer? Explain in words to Sandy how she should set up and solve this problem. Write a word problem for Sandy that would involve adding these numbers so that she understands what addition means. Ask yourself….how many sections are there? This is how many sections your paper needs. acb

R – Restate You MUST RESTATE EACH of the questions that are being asked in the ECR. This ensures that you are answering all parts of the ECR and that you are answering the RIGHT question! R OPE

___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ a. The correct answer is ___________. b. Sandy should set up this problem by _______ c. 6 O - Organize In this section, we double check to make sure we are set up to answer all parts of the question. We will underline any key words such as “show work,” “organize,” and “draw a picture.” You should reread the question to make sure you know where you are headed. R O PE

P - Prove In the “prove” step, you will “prove” what you know by completing and showing the work. You must show your work for EVERY SECTION, and do what the questions asks. If it says to draw a picture, that is what you do. If you believe they must perform an operation, that is what you should do. Things should be clear and labeled, if necessary. RO P E

E – Expand and Explain In this step, fill in your answers along with an explanation. You must always write in complete sentences and should explain something in all cases. ROP E

___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ a. The correct answer is __5,559. I know because I added the numbers up above. b. Sandy should set up this problem by _______ c. 12 Grading and Logistics Possible grades are 0, 1, 2, 3. 0 - You show no understanding of the concept 1 - You show limited understanding of the concept 2 – You show all work and understand most parts of the problem 3 – You show all work, answer all parts of the question, and understand all parts of the problem. You must ALWAYS show work and WRITE AT LEAST 1 SENTENCE for every part of the problem. If you fail to do this, your HW or CW will be INCOMPLETE. This is a chance to show what you know…even if you don’t know everything, you should work to get as many points as you can! THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS!
