3 EXPANDING INTO RURAL MARKETS  Nokia’s earlier products for rural market:  mobile handsets with features such as longer battery life, one-touch flashlight  Lowe end affordable phones  Noted that the rural consumers had little or no access to the information they needed due to lack of resources and erratic Internet connections  This prompted Nokia to launch a service that would be embedded in its handsets and would serve the needs of the rural community- Nokia Life Tools  Nokia commercially rolled out the NLT service in 10 districts in Maharashtra, in June 2009 after garnering success in the pilot program in Maharashtra  In addition to giving information related to agriculture, it helped farmers to save on time and money, be better informed, and take correct decisions  Learning tools for students

4 WHY NOKIA LIFE TOOLS?  Huge opportunity in embedded services in rural market with little access to information services and internet  Strategy to increase its penetration in rural markets since the urban markets were approaching saturation  There was a slump in handset sales due to the global economic slowdown

5 THE RISE AND FALL OF NOKIA (1/3)  1865  Fredrik Idestam, a mining engineer, set up Nokia Ab, a paper manufacturing company, in Finland  1967  Nokia Ab, Finnish Rubber Works, and Finnish Cable Workswere merged to form the Nokia Corporation  1980s  created the Nordic Mobile Telephone 12 (NMT) standard and launched the first NMT phone  delivered the first GSM network to Radiolinja, a Finnish company  1992  Launched first GSM enabled Nokia phone  1992-96  Nokia exited from businesses like rubber, cable, and consumer electronics after which its prime businesses were mobile phones and telecommunications equipment

6 THE RISE AND FALL OF NOKIA (1/3)  Late 1990s  Luxury phones by brand name Vertu  Nokia‘s GSM equipment was being used by more than 90 operators across the world with presence in more than 130 countries across the world  2001  3G phones, camera and video camera integrated  2002  4% decrease in US revenues  2004-05  Market share decline by 35%  Could not catch up with the market with competitors outdating Nokia’s products

7 THE RISE AND FALL OF NOKIA (1/3)  2004  increased its focus on emerging markets like China and India with low cost handsets  the brand suffered declining sales in developed markets since innovation had taken a back seat at the company  2005  Launched N-series handsets, positoned as Hi-tech and stylish phones- Instant hit!  The total mobile phone subscriptions across the world surpassed the 2 billion mark  2007  Market leader in the world with 40% share  2009  Market share fell to 36%

8 BUSINESS STRATEGY IN EMERGING MARKETS  Increase the usage of mobile phones in rural areas  Decrease the initial costs associated with owning a mobile phone, in addition to reducing the operating costs  Convey to people in emerging markets, the benefits associated with mobile telephony  Bring the Internet power to the emerging markets Despite the decline in growth in the global market, Nokia‘s business strategy in the emerging markets helped it retain its market leadership position
