OFFICE OF THESIS AND DISSERTATION REVIEW James Nail

The Problem The Office of Thesis and Dissertation Format Review is part of the Library Organizational Structure and works closely with the Office of the Graduate School. In 2007, Mississippi State University made the electronic submission of Theses and Dissertations mandatory. In 2010, the Office of the Graduate School requested the research and development of formatting templates for use with Microsoft Word. Current templates: http://lib.msstate.edu/thesis/templates/http://lib.msstate.edu/thesis/templates/

The Opportunities Challenges in designing the template provided an incentive to re- evaluate existing formatting standards with regards to the strengths of electronic media and the removal of obsolete print-based requirements. The template is designed to empower writing by using tools to automate as much of the formatting as possible. Bonus: the process educates students on special features in Word that will be applicable in the workforce. Utilized a marketing campaign with customized outreach workshops directed at individual departments that demonstrated the utility of the templates and promoted additional library services.

The Experience Authors: – Who use the template after having written their document, following the instructions, love the template. “Wish they had it when they started writing.” – Who did not initially follow the instructions, spend less time reformatting by placing their content into a new copy of the template, after being shown the basics and the instructions. – Who use the template from the beginning, including the proposal stage, benefit the most from the features used (quickparts, styles, and navigation pane) in both writing and revising their document.

The Experience Our office has assisted the University of Southern Mississippi in developing similar templates for their students, and we will be teaming with the Mississippi University for Women to do the same. Other library services are being utilized based upon our referrals during our outreach efforts, especially the research consultation services.

PUBLIC SERVICES AND OUTREACH Gail Peyton

Research Consultations

MSU Embedded Library Program Began in 2013 at the request of the Dean Component of the Libraries’ Strategic Plan 2013-2017 – Goal: Increase collaborative activities with classroom faculty and departments by embedding librarians. Embedded Librarians include: – Honors College – Department of Human Sciences – College of Education – College of Business

MSU Embedded Library Program Embedded Librarians include: – Honors College – Department of Human Sciences – College of Education – Social Science Research Center – Forestry – College of Business – Center for America’s Veterans (2016)

Benefits of the Embedded Librarian Program Increased visibility to graduate students and faculty Positive feedback in surveys Increased use of research consultations (and ALL library services) Increased collaborative research and teaching opportunities with faculty

Lessons Learned From the Embedded Librarian Program Flexibility is important (For librarians and administrators!) Learn the needs of the departments or areas: each assignment will be different. Assess services and make adjustments as needed. Focus on building relationships.

Conclusions Leverage existing resources and services. Look for collaborative opportunities and partnerships. Be willing to risk failure!
