Math Club 9/2/2015

How was summer?

Welcome Back! Hi Everyone! My name is John Cao, the founder of the Manvel High School Math Club (est. May 2015) Hopefully we will be able to learn a lot throughout this year about higher level math.

Schedule for next few meetings Today: Intro and greetings, intro to UIL Math 9/9/15: Chapter 4: proportions 9/16/15: Officer Elections; intro to UIL number sense and calculator 9/23/15: Chapter 5 Using the Integers

Officer stuff There are going to be 4 open officer positions: Vice President: helps the president teach and facilitate meetings Secretary: keeps minutes, maintains attendance records, responsible for all sign-up sheets Competition Manager: finds and registers the math club for competitions Publicity Officer: Makes and distributes flyers, posters If you have any more ideas for types of officers, just let me know and I will add it onto the list.

Officer stuff For people who want to run for an officer position: make sure that you prepare a speech to say on 9/16/15. We will also vote on that date, and officer results will be posted on 9/17/15 on Mr. Janecke’s door.

Responsibilities of Officers Bringing snacks Ordering/making math club materials Coming up with lessons And last but not obviously not least……………. Taking care of the president

Review from Last Year If you have not already, please go through the 3 math club power points on Mr. Janecke’s webpage. They are really helpful.

Review Problems What is (4/9) (-3/2) simplified? 1 st, we distribute the exponent into both the numerator and the denominator. Then we separate -3/2 into (1/2)(-3) Then we can simplify that into (1/8)/(1/27) = 27/8

Review Problems The number 66 is written as the sum of two smaller numbers. One of these numbers is 3 more than twice the other number. Find the larger of the two numbers. We can write one of the numbers as x, and one of the numbers as y. 2x+3=y, x+y=66 X=21, y=42 Yaayyyyy we did some algebra 1

Review Problems Adam can do a job in 10 days, while Brenda takes 15 days to do it. After Brenda works alone for 3 days, Adam and Brenda work together to finish the job. How many days did Adam work? Adam does 1/10 of the job every day, and Brenda does 1/15 of the job every day. The first 3 days, because only Brenda works, 3(1/15) =1/5 of the job is completed. During the next few days, each day’s work is (1/10+ 1/15) = 1/6. We can have the equation 1=1/5 + x/6. Solve and you will get x=24/5.

UIL Math It is a 40 minute 60 question multiple choice test. It tests you skills from algebra 1…..all the way to elementary calculus (basically Calculus AB) Calculators are permitted It is mostly general math, although 5% of the questions are definition/things you don’t learn in school

Here is a sample UIL Math Worksheet I will give you guys the answers next week. Give it a try!

The end See you guys next week!
