3 Cold Weather Related Conditions: 1. Chilblains: Skin sores or bumps that occur after exposure to very cold temperatures Caused by prolonged exposure of cold air on bare skin Symptoms: initially pale and colorless, then itching, red patches, swelling and blistering COLD WEATHER CONDITIONS Target: I will be able to describe methods for avoiding, responding to and recovering from climate-related physical conditions Pg. 19

Frostbite: The freezing of body tissues (often the extremities- fingers, toes, ears, and nose) Symptoms: Numbness, cold skin, and waxy/discolored appearance of the skin Prevention: Dress in layers and cover all exposed skin when out in the cold weather Treatment for Mild Frostbite: Do not rub the tissues, and rewarm the area in lukewarm water for 25- 40 minutes if medical center is not nearby Treatment for Severe Frostbite: Seek medical attention immediately

Hypothermia: Potentially fatal condition caused by abnormally low core body temperature The body can no longer warm itself and core temperature drops below 95 degrees Occurs in cold, windy, and rainy weather or prolonged activity in 40-50 degree temperatures Shivering will begin when normal temperature drop to 93.2 degrees and stops between 87-90 degrees

9 Symptoms: Shivering, cold hands/feet, slowed pulse, poor judgement, disorientation, hallucinations, body systems failing, and death (at about 75-80 degrees)

10 Prevention: Stay hydrated, bring a friend, wear layers of clothing (wool hats, socks, gloves, wind and waterproof jackets) Treatment: Call 911 immediately, remove wet clothing, cover with warm blankets and hot packs, cover the head, give victim warm/sweet fluids Summary:
