1 Major Academic Plan (MAP) Why teach middle school math or elementary school with a math emphasis? Young people need teachers who help them conceptualize mathematical ideas and use them in solving problems. A major in elementary/middle school mathematics will deepen your understanding of K-9 mathematics, of how students build their own understanding of K-9 mathematics, and of how K-9 mathematics contributes to the mathematics studied in high school and beyond. Teaching mathematics to elementary and middle school students allows you to make a difference in the lives of young people by empowering them to understand the world mathematically, use quantitative reasoning to make decisions in their lives, and expand their opportunities to choose interesting careers. Student Learning Outcomes Students will: 1. Demonstrate and apply in the classroom a profound understanding of fundamental mathematics within the K–9 curriculum, of how these topics progress within the K–9 range, of how these topics extend and relate to the mathematics in the secondary curriculum, and of the fundamental concepts in the curriculum in the secondary curriculum. 2. Demonstrate and apply in the classroom a deep understanding of how students learn mathematics and of the pedagogical knowledge specific to mathematics teaching and learning. 3. Demonstrate a productive disposition as a student and teacher of mathematics.
