P4C

 Please continue to read for 15 to 20 minutes every day; recipes, T.V guides, magazine articles, comic strips or catalogues are as valuable as the fiction and non-fiction books you select EVERY MONDAY between 10:50-11:25.  In our 8 week term until the Summer holidays we recognise that the nights will become lighter and the temperatures a little less arctic. The combination of these factors tend to coincide with a depletion in homework being handed in on a weekly basis…  This is understandable - if a little unfair on the soldiers who fight on until the last stand – as no-one likes missing out on all that skate park/ river walk/ festival fun-with -friends action!

 We needed to come up with a plan that was both educational and easy to absorb into our new Summer schedules!  As a compromise and in collaboration with the children of P4C, we have composed a list of ‘alternative’ Summer Homework Tasks which can be completed in any order and at a time that suits.(one a week as a rough guide)  On the rare occasion that a grey cloud should grace our skies in the next couple of months….Our Mathletics website will still be open for business and Mrs Guy will place our spelling rule for each week in our class blog on the school website so that formal learning at home is still an option.  Here are the great ideas our class suggested and endorse for our Summer Homework Programme….

 Watch a film and write a 5 sentence review about it to inform someone who hasn’t seen it yet. Could you design a costume idea for the Haddington Festival Parade from the characters in your chosen film?  Ask an adult to tell you about what they did in their summer evenings when they were your age. Listen carefully to their answer(s) and think of 3 more questions you could ask them.  Visit a local landmark, The Garleton Monument, Traprain Law, North Berwick Law or another of your choosing and write a diary entry about what you saw there and how you felt about your visit.

 Choose a method of travel; jog, run, cycle, scoot or skate to cover a specific distance and time yourself. Repeat the same distance each week and record your time. Aim to get faster!  Play Mathletics Games; challenge people from around the world at level 1 and 2  Play scrabble, snakes and ladders, Yatzee, Othello, Monopoly or Chess with a family member of friend. [Extension: Can you make a garden friendly version of your favourite board game?]  Make a detailed map of an outside space you enjoy playing in now that the nights are lighter. It could be your garden, a part of Neilson Park, your street or a beach you enjoy playing on.

 With an adult, try skimming flat pebbles over the Tyne or Forth river(s) How many skimmers (jumps) can you get the pebble to make?  Choose to really study a landscape from around the place where you stay and draw and/or write what you can see.  Plant something new in a garden. Make a simple diary of the life of your new plant.  Help your parents/carers to prepare a healthy meal – e-mail Mrs Guy a photo of the finished masterpiece and she’ll add it to the class blog.

 Remember – you do not have to complete all of the tasks- just a selection  Try to choose activities that appeal to both you and the person who supports you at home.  The aim is to have as much fun as possible while you learn!  Mrs Guy looks forward to seeing your photographs and reading any written work you submit over the coming weeks.  Last date for handing in any work will be June 24 th.
