Definition of FAD; A fish aggregating (or aggregation) device (FAD) is a man-made object used to attract ocean going pelagic fish such as marlin, tuna, skipjack and dolphin fish. They usually consist of buoys or floats moored to the ocean floor with concrete blocks (anchors). FAD, Fish Aggregation Device, is well known as “Payaw” in the countries of Southeast Asia where it may have originated. 4. What is FAD?
4
Factors affecting FAD development 1.FAD design – Climate change resilient FAD design – “VATUIKA FAD DESIGN” 2.Site selection Up-welling (Short continental shelve) Current Historical information from fishers 3.Fishing technology vs Tuna distribution (vertical and horizontal) DBS depth (500m)

Vanuatu Low-Cost (Vatuika) offshore FAD design (500 - 1,000m depth)
9
FAD Site selection 1.FAD Deployment a)flat or gentle slope b)Remoteness of the site c)Smooth and fairly moderate current flow 2.FAD productivity a)Up-welling a)Vanuatu – drop-off close to shore b)Current – “Express high-way” c)Tuna migration route – fishers historical information

13
Advantage of Vatuika FAD 1.Easy to construct by community 2.Cost-effective on FAD materials 3.Easy to travel with by airline with one unit of FAD from one island to another 4.Deploy at any location except at very steep slope 5.Easy to handle and can be deploy using local banana boats 6.High productivity depending on the deployment site selection 7.Quick disaster response tool – “food security & livelihood” 8.Withstand category 5 cyclone PAM

Advance FAD program development 1.Sea temperature Determine the tune fishing depth within 12nm Vanuatu waters 2.Bathymetry and mapping of all potential sites - Efate Marine chart 3.Identify sessional current and main current in Vanuatu waters
