“The Sixth Commandment” Exodus 20:13 04/10/2011 Dr. Dane Boyles

“The Sixth Commandment” “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The Ten Commandments direct God’s people to uphold their neighbor’s fundamental rights.

Exodus 20:13-16 13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

Exodus 20:17 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

“The Sixth Commandment”  Shielding Our “Brother” from Brutality 13 “You shall not murder (Exodus 20:13).

Exodus 20:23 23 Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.

Exodus 9:24 24 If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times.”

Genesis 9:5 5 And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.

Genesis 9:6 6 “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.

“The Sixth Commandment” 33 “Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it” (Num. 35:33). 22 “without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Heb. 9:22).

“The Sixth Commandment”  Shielding Our “Brother” from Neglect 8 When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof so that you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from the roof. (Deut 22:8)

“The Sixth Commandment”  Shielding Our Brother from Our Fury 21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ (Matt. 5:21)

Matthew 5:22 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

“The Sixth Commandment” 17 “‘Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in their guilt. (Lev. 19:17) 26 26 “do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 27 and do not give the devil an opportunity” (Eph 4:26-27).

“The Sixth Commandment”  Becoming a Innovative Force for Life (Luke 10:25-37) 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. (10:30)

Luke 10:31 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.

Luke 10:32 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

Luke 10:33-34 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him.

Luke 10:35 35 The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

Luke 10:36-37 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:30-37)

“The Sixth Commandment” “Am I my brother’s keeper?”This is the radical answer to Cain’s question, “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
