Must Be True Main Point Assumption Strengthen/Support Resolve the Paradox Weaken Method of Reasoning Flaw in the Reasoning Parallel Reasoning Evaluate the Argument

Red Bible Questions o 1 o 2 Orange GMAT Questions o 41 o 91

From Family 1: Prove Find the paraphrase or logical conclusion. Correct answers can always be proven by referring to facts in the stimulus. Do not consider outside knowledge (except for common sense). Stimulus is often a fact set, not an argument.

Common question stems: o If the statements above are true, which of the following must also be true? o Which one of the following conclusions is best supported by the statements above? o The statements above, if true, best support which of the following assertions? o Which of the following can be correctly inferred from the statements above?

Flavonoids are a common component of almost all plants, but a specific variety of flavonoid in apples has been found to be an antioxidant. Antioxidants are known to be a factor in the prevention of heart disease. Which one of the following can be properly inferred from the passage?

Flavonoids are a common component of almost all plants, but a specific variety of flavonoid in apples has been found to be an antioxidant. Antioxidants are known to be a factor in the prevention of heart disease. Which one of the following can be properly inferred from the passage?

A) A diet composed largely of fruits and vegetables will help to prevent heart disease. B) Flavonoids are essential to preventing heart disease. C) Eating at least one apple each day will prevent heart disease. D) At least one type of flavonoid helps to prevent heart disease. E) A diet deficient in antioxidants is a common cause of heart disease.

Two common types of correct answers: o Paraphrase (restates part of the stimulus) o Logical Conclusions (sum of stimulus statements)

Six common types of incorrect answers: o Could be true o Exaggerated o NEW information o “The Shell Game” o Opposite o Reverse

The importance of the ozone layer to terrestrial animals is that it entirely filters out some wavelengths of light but lets others through. Holes in the ozone layer and the dangers associated with these holes are well documented. However, one danger that has not been given sufficient attention is that these holes could lead to severe eye damage for animals of many species. Which of the following is most strongly supported by the statements above, if they are true?

A) All wavelengths of sunlight that can cause eye damage are filtered out by the ozone layer where it is intact. ALL should be a red flag.

B) Few species of animals live on a part of the earth’s surface that is not threatened by holes in the ozone layer. We do NOT know that few of the species live in non-threatened areas – that statement is not in the stimulus.

C) Some species of animals have eyes that will not suffer any damage when exposed to unfiltered sunlight. Nothing in the stimulus proves this. Perhaps some animals just get lucky- they don’t need special eyes!

D) A single wavelength of sunlight can cause severe damage to the eyes of most species of animals. Most and many are different! Be careful!

E) Some wavelengths of sunlight that cause eye damage are more likely to reach the earth’s surface where there are holes in the ozone layer than where there are not. YES! We can follow the chain of connections to reach this conclusion.
