Movement in and out of cells
2
You need to learn this definition: Diffusion is the net movement of molecules from a region of their higher concentration to a region of their lower concentration down a concentration gradient
3
Solute (salt) Solvent (water)Solution (salt water)
4
The more particles of solute in a given volume of solvent, the higher the concentration of the solution - The solution is concentrated
5
The less particles of solute in a given volume of solvent, the lower the concentration of the solution - The solution is dilute
6
animation Particles will randomly move from an area where there are lots of particles, into areas where there are less High concentration of particles Low concentration of particles Random movementParticles all spread out

Diffusion can involve the movement of gases or dissolved molecules Your body’s survival depends on oxygen and dissolved food molecules getting into your cells. Oxygen and dissolved food molecules must diffuse into and out of the blood for transportation around the body. Breathing involves the exchange of gases in the lungs, a process which occurs by diffusion.
12
Diffusion in and out of cells diffusion Oxygen and nutrients are carried to the cells in the bloodstream The blood has a higher concentration of O 2 and nutrients Diffusion into the cells Carbon dioxide is produced in the cells The cells have a higher concentration of CO 2 than the blood Diffusion into the blood O 2 high concentration O 2 low concentration CO 2 low concentration CO 2 high concentration
