Reflection and Mirrors Page 617

Rays Light waves travelling in straight lines.

Regular Reflection When parallel rays of light hit a smooth surface, resulting in a sharp reflection. Diffuse Reflection When parallel rays of light hit a bumpy or uneven surface, resulting in an unclear reflection.

Plane Mirrors A flat sheet of glass that has a smooth, silver- colored coating on one side. When light strikes the mirror, the coating reflects the light, producing an IMAGE. Image - a copy of the object formed by reflected or refracted rays of light.

Virtual Image An upright image that forms where light seems to come from. A plane mirror produces a virtual image that is upright and the same size as the object, but in reverse.

Concave Mirrors A mirror with a surface that curves inward like the inside of a bowl.

Optical axis An imaginary line that divides a mirror in half.

Focal Point The point at which rays parallel to the optical axis meet.

Real Image Forms when rays actually meet, and are upside down, and may be larger or smaller than the object.

Convex Mirrors A mirror with a surface that curves outward. Because the light rays never meet, images formed by convex mirrors are always virtual and smaller than the object.
