2 What is health? Answer the following questions in small groups:  What do you think it means to be healthy?  What are some of the characteristics of someone who is healthy?  What about someone who is ill?  How would you define health? Is it simply your physical state, or does it include more than that?

3 Definition of Health “A complete state of physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” - World Health Organization (1948)

4 Session Learning Objectives  Objective 1: In small groups, participants will critically think about what it means to be healthy and will develop and present their own definition of health.  Objective 2: In small groups, participants will identify at least 3 ways in which public health affects their daily lives.

5 Definition of public health “Public health is the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting physical health and efficacy through organized community efforts for the sanitation of the environment, the control of communicable infections, the education of the individual in personal hygiene, the organization of medical and nursing services for the early diagnosis and preventive treatment of disease, and the development of social machinery which will ensure every individual in the community a standard of living adequate for the maintenance of health; so organizing these benefits in such a fashion as to enable every citizen to realize his birthright and longevity. - Winslow (1920)
