3 Imperialism The extension of a nation’s power over other lands.

4 Ch. 14:1 Colonial Rule in SE Asia 1. 4 Primary motivations for Imperialism: -economic -political power -racial superiority -Moral responsibility to civilize primitive people

5 2. Protectorate -political unit that depends on another for protection 3. Thailand (Siam)- only remaining free state in SE Asia due to King Mongkut who kept friendly relations with major European powers.

6 4. U.S. interests in Philippine Islands: -*convenient point for trade w/ rich China markets -Phil. wanted US help to rid Spanish control -Emilio Aguinaldo continued revolt after defeating Spanish & made himself President of Islands

7 5. Indirect rule - local leaders allowed to maintain their positions of authority in new colonial setting direct rule - used if local leaders resisted foreign conquest, officials are brought in from mother country

8 6. Colonial powers preferred colonists not to develop own industries…. - because they wanted colonies to provide a market for their own manufactured goods & to provide raw materials for those goods.

20 Indian National Congress (INC) -formed to call for share in governing, but hard due to Hindus vs. Muslims Mohandas Gandhi – led nonviolent movement to force Britian to help poor and to grant India independence
