1 Farmers

2 Farmers The farmers were the last major group of people to come to New France. In fact the majority of the newcomers were farmers. These farmers were separated into two main groups-seigneurs and habitants.

3 SEIGNEURS AND SEIGNEURIES
The seigneurs were people who had supported the king or had been soliders and were rewarded with land when they went to New France. They were granted seigneuries. But even thought people lived and had houses on certain parts of the land the king still owned it all. Since eighty present of people in New France lived on farms the seigneurial system was used. . The seigneurial system was invented because this way more people could live in a smaller area. The sizes of squares varied from ten to one hindered square kilometers. The seigneurs or lords would then rent it out to habitats who would farm the land in estrange for a place to stay. when the seigneurs would die their children would all receive equal inheritance were as the English rules were all the land would go to the oldest male. The seigneurs had to build some things in order to get to keep the land. They had to build a mill, fort, place of worship, and a manor house. The seigneurs also had to make the choice of living on the land or hiring someone responsible to take care of their land. The seigneurs were also responsible to protect and settle disputes.

4 Some of the key feature of the seigneurial lay outs
- They were places near the water for farm and personal use - The fields were long and narrow so as many as possible habitants could live their - And finally there was common land for social and recreational events

5 HABITANTS The habitants were not exactly first class they had to arrange an agreement with their seigneur that said in order to stay they would have to do certain jobs and would have to give their seigneur a part of their harvest. They also had to pay additional taxes to their seigneurs for a whole bunch of other things. One they had to pay is their Lods et ventes taxes which are the equivalent of inheritance taxes. The habitants didn’t necessarily live an easy life. They had multiple taxes and they had to work sun up to sundown. When they first arrived to their new place to live they had to build their own house, then they had to clear the land to make it possible for anything to grow or for it to be possible for any animals to be raised. On top of that they had to harvest their seigneurs land without pay ten days a year and provide free labour. Also because they were in New France or Canada were there are harsh winters. The winters would also pile on jobs like cutting fire wood.

6 Habitants winter jobs were:
Caring for animals Cutting fire wood

7 Habitants spring jobs were:
Repairing fences Taking animals to pastures Ploughing and planting fields

8 Habitants summer jobs were:
