2 Definition  The use of exothermic nuclear processes to generate heat and electricity  There are three types of Nuclear Energy; nuclear fission, nuclear decay, and nuclear fusion

3 Uses Originally And Modern Day  When nuclear power was discovered in the 20 th century it was used for sheer power  Today it provides 5.7% of our world’s energy  It is also 13% of the world’s electricity  In modern day we not only use nuclear energy to power things on Earth but also in space (used to launch rockets effectively)  Nuclear energy today is also used to make destructive nuclear weapons

4 Discovery  The discovery of nuclear power was in the 20 th century  It was when scientists found out that the element, radium, offered and immense amount of energy  Nuclear power was thought to be impractical for regular use due to it not being consistent (short half-lives but great amounts of energy)  The harnessing of nuclear energy was not possible until James Chadwick discovered the neutron which lacked a positive charge

5 Timeline  Early 20 th century- discovered radium released immense amount of energy  1930s- discovered nuclear fission  1932- discovered the neutron which led to discovery of induced radioactivity (creating radium like elements with less resources)  1942- first nuclear reactor

6 Pros & Cons Pros:  Lots of energy is present at one time  More cost efficient compared to electricity and gasoline Cons:  A dangerous way of creating energy since the nuclear reactor can explode leading to accidents  Comes from uranium which is a non- renewable source

7 Interesting Info.  Nuclear fusion has the potential to be safer energy as the temperature is cooler compared to the power plants that use nuclear fission  Every 18 to 24 months a power plant has to shut down to remove spent uranium fuel that has become waste  91% efficiency rate for powering 24/7

8 Other Info.  Distributed from uranium that has gone through nuclear fission in power plants  The chemical reaction that releases the energy is nuclear fission which is the splitting of an atom  235-URAINIUM + NEUTRON => 3 NEUTRONS + 142-BARIUM + 91-KRYTON
