Energy Transformations Notes TEKS 7.5.A recognize that radiant energy from the sun is transformed into chemical energy through the process of photosynthesis

All living things are made up of small microscopic cells.

All cells need energy to perform their functions.

Photosynthesis & cellular respiration are two energy producing processes that occur in these microscopic structures to sustain life.

Photosynthesis is the food making process of plants and some other organisms that takes place in the presence of light.

Plant cells photosynthesize to convert radiant energy into chemical energy.

Chloroplasts in plant cells contain the green pigment chlorophyll which absorbs radiant energy & uses it to convert carbon dioxide & water into chemical energy stored in glucose.

Oxygen (O 2 ) is also produced during photosynthesis and released into the atmosphere.

Plants and other organisms use glucose a food source which provides the energy needed for growth, reproduction, absorption of nutrients & other life processes.

Chemical equation for photosynthesis:

The mitochondria of plant & animal cells use oxygen to break the chemical bonds of glucose, which releases the energy they need, through a process called cellular respiration.

The energy released during cellular respiration is in the form of ATP (Adenosine Tri-Phosphate) & used for different cell activities.

ATP energy is used by organisms in the form of thermal and mechanical energy.

Water & carbon dioxide are the other products for this reaction.
