Aims To support participants to better understand the:  opportunities and challenges of implementing the LNF  ways in which quality numeracy can be embedded across the whole school  pedagogical shifts necessary in maths and other lessons to fulfil the requirements of the LNF  current position of their own school in order to plan their next steps.

What is the LNF? A curriculum planning tool A way of assessing whether learners are on target for their year group A framework of literacy and numeracy progression An assessment tool A means of formative assessment to improve teaching and learning A shift in key stage expectations for literacy and numeracy Sam Wil Sazi BrynJez Rufus

What is numeracy?  Discuss the meaning of ‘numeracy’. Draw a mind map to show your key ideas.  Share your ideas with another group (jigsaw).  In your group, formulate a definition of ‘numeracy’.

What does numeracy look like in the LNF? Developing numerical reasoning Using number skills Using measuring skills Using data skills

Population graph – problem solving  In your groups, work out where each card fits on the graph. Justify your decisions.  In terms of the LNF, which strands and elements are hit?  In which year group’s expectations might your group’s deliberations sit? Why?  What further questions would a teacher need to ask to get to learners’ reasoning?

What opportunities does the numeracy section of the LNF offer to your school? Think-pair-share What are the opportunities for:  your school  your teachers  your classroom assistants  your learners?

What challenges does the numeracy section of the LNF pose for your school? Placemat activity What are the challenges for:  your school  your teachers  your classroom assistants  your learners?

What should a good numeracy policy include?  aims and objectives  teaching strategies  common terminology across the curriculum  numeracy strategies:  calculation  using a calculator  data handling  problem solving  solving equations  accuracy in measuring and drawing  numerical reasoning.  year group expectations from the LNF.
