Session #4 – A Study of Sanctification

But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sin every year. (Hebrews 10:3) ‏

Leviticus 16:11-16

"Aaron shall present the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. He shall kill the bull as a sin offering for himself. And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the LORD, and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small, and he shall bring it inside the veil and put the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is over the testimony, so that he does not die.

And he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat on the east side, and in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times. "Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it over the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat.

Thus he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleannesses of the people of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins. And so he shall do for the tent of meeting, which dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses. (Leviticus 16:11-16) ‏

But into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people. (Hebrews 9:7) ‏

But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. (Hebrews 9:11-12) ‏

For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. (Hebrews 9:24) ‏

And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, (Hebrews 10:11-12) ‏

For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. (Hebrews 10:14) ‏

Aaron entered once a year Aaron entered once a year Aaron entered in a cloud of smoke Aaron entered in a cloud of smoke Aaron entered repeatedly Aaron entered repeatedly Sacrifices did not make perfect Sacrifices did not make perfect Christ entered once for all Christ entered once for all Christ entered in triumph Christ entered in triumph Christ entered once Christ entered once Sacrifice perfected us forever Sacrifice perfected us forever

Hebrews 10:12-14

But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

Perfected (teleioo ̄ ) – “consummate (in character)” (Strong’s) ‏ “A Finished Work” John 4:34 – John 17:4 (Hebrews 2:10; 5:9; 7:19, 28; 9:9; 10:1, 14; 11:40; 12:23) ‏

Forever (die ̄ nekes) – perpetually (Strong’s) He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever. (Hebrews 7:3) ‏

Forever (die ̄ nekes) – perpetually (Strong’s) But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, (Hebrews 10:12) ‏

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; (Hebrews 10:19-20) ‏

Having therefore, brethren, boldness (CONFIDENCE) to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; (Hebrews 10:19-20) ‏

How Does Perfection Relate to Sanctification?

Straighter?

Rounder?

Fuller?

Neither

Things are either Perfect or Imperfect Which are you?

For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. (Hebrews 10:12-14) ‏

Your Perfection Before God Is NOT Equal To The Quality Of Your Sanctification

Sanctify (hagiazo ̄ ): “to make holy, that is, (ceremonially) purify or consecrate; (mentally) to venerate” (Strong’s) ‏ Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine. (Exodus 13:2) ‏

Sanctify unto me all the firstborn... (Exodus 13:2) ‏ That thou shalt set apart unto the LORD all that openeth the matrix, and every firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast; the males shall be the LORD'S. (Exodus 13:12) ‏

Sanctify = “to set apart”

And Moses said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it. (Exodus 19:23) ‏

Are Those Being Set Apart For God’s Use Are Those Being Set Apart For God’s Use

“The present participle expresses continuous or repeated action” (Spiros Zodhiates) ‏

Sanctification Is An Act, Followed By A Process.

To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: (1 Corinthians 1:2) ‏

And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:11) ‏

Where the Corinthians Sanctified? Yes When were they Sanctified? When they were Washed (6:11) ‏

Despite all the many problems at Corinth, they were still sanctified. Their lives were given to the service of God. The fact that they were not very “good” at it did not change their being sanctified.

Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work. (2 Timothy 2:20-21) ‏

if anyone cleanses... he will be... set apart as holy... Here Sanctification is... Conditional – “IF” Personal – “ANYONE”

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor. (1Thessalonians 4:3-4) ‏

you abstain... each one of you know how to control... Again, Conditional and Personal Conditional and Personal

God-likeness Time

God-likeness Time At Which Point Do You Become Perfect?

God-likeness Time

God-likeness Time At Which Point Do You Become Imperfect?

Your Perfection Before God Is NOT Equal To The Quality Of Your Sanctification

God-likeness Time He Perfected Forever Those That Are Being Sanctified

Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work. (2 Timothy 2:20-21) ‏

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. (2 Peter 3:18) ‏

The “Perfected Ones” are walking in the light (1 John 1:7-9) ‏ The “Perfected Ones” are walking in the light (1 John 1:7-9) ‏ One can let the “great salvation slip” (Hebrews. 2:3) ‏ One can let the “great salvation slip” (Hebrews. 2:3) ‏ One can sin willfully and turn from the Christ (Hebrews. 10:26) ‏ One can sin willfully and turn from the Christ (Hebrews. 10:26) ‏ One can sin a sin “unto death” (1 John 5:16). One can sin a sin “unto death” (1 John 5:16).

But the unintentional sins of life (which do not come as a result of a wilful turning from God) do not require another offering for sin (Hebrews 9:9-12) ‏.
