1 Training Children- Know God Deuteronomy 6:1-13

2 Introduction Effects on generations to come –Success or failure affects the church –An undisciplined child is treated as illegitimate

3 Introduction Must know God –“Know”: understand and relate to God –Future is at stake

4 Presupposes a Proper Climate Two necessary components –Genuine love (Titus 2:4) –Affection (John 11:35; Luke 15:20-24)

5 Presupposes a Proper Climate Close relationship with God –Devoted from the heart (Matthew 6:33) –What do our children see in us?

6 Presupposes a Proper Climate Several things to understand about God –He is Deity and we are not (Genesis 1:1) –He has all authority (Matthew 21:23-27) –He loves and disciplines us (Hebrews 12:5-11)

7 A Way For Us To Know Him Existence proved by creation –Known as “natural revelation” –Not always accepted (Psalm 19:1-6; Acts 14:17; Romans 1:18-20)

8 A Way For Us To Know Him Relate to Him through obedience –Known as “special revelation” –Supplied with all that we “need” to know (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:3)

9 A Way For Us To Know Him Proper priorities –Looking to please men or God? (John 12:42, 43; Galatians 1:10) –Will our children follow us, or what we teach them?

10 His Care of His Children Personal concern –Provision for orphans and widows –Jesus’ concern for children (Matthew 19:13, 14) –Too little concern for children today

11 His Care of His Children Training is necessary –Good teaching in the wisdom literature (Proverbs 22:6, 15; 29:15, 17) –Required of us (Ephesians 6:4)

12 His Care of His Children Some accept the training…others do not –Lean on the Lord for understanding (Proverbs 3:5, 6) –Timothy accepted his training (2 Timothy 3:15) –Some appreciate it (Proverbs 31:28) –Others bring shame (Proverbs 19:26; 29:15)

13 His Care of His Children Learn to look at God as our Father –Willing to be our Father (2 Corinthians 6:18) –Made plans for us (Ephesians 1:5; 3:10, 11) –Plan for their physical, emotional, and spiritual well being

14 Conclusion Serve God in our generation (Acts 13:46) Are we building character in them? Our home is where morality is taught
