1 Objectives: 1.Be able to write equations of application problems. 2.Be able to solve applications using substitution or elimination. Critical Vocabulary: Systems of Equations WARM-UP: Solve the system using the method of your choice 3x = 7y +5 -2x – 4y + 3 = -2

2 Example 1: Jenny has a coin collection that consists of only dimes and quarters. Her collection is worth $266.90. If she has 1388 coins, how many of each does she have? Q = number of quarters D = number of dimes Equation 1: D + Q = 1388 Equation 2: $0.10D + $0.25Q = $266.90 Dimes = 534 and Quarters = 854 Equation 1: -0.10D – 0.10Q = -138.8 Equation 2: $0.10D + $0.25Q = $266.90 0.15Q = 128.1 Q = 854 D + 854 = 1388D = 534

3 Example 2: The school sells tickets to the school play at a price of $3.50 for students and $5.00 for Adults. The number of adult tickets were 8 more than half the number of student tickets. If they made $844, how many of each type were sold? S = Student Tickets A = Adult Tickets Equation 1: $3.50S + $5.00A = $844 Equation 2: A = ½S + 8 Student Tickets = 134 and Adult Tickets = 75 3.50S + 5.00 (½S + 8) = 844 3.50S + 2.50S + 40 = 844 6S + 40 = 844 6S = 804 S = 134 A = ½(134) + 8 A = 66 + 8 A = 75
