2 The moon is the Earth’s satellite. It takes about 28 days to revolve around the Earth The moon has a geosynchronous orbit, since its revolution period (28 days) is the same as its rotation period (28 days).

3 Because the moon rotates at the same speed as it orbits the Earth, we always see the same side of the moon here on Earth.

4 Half of the moon is always reflecting light from the sun. The phases are the part of the reflected half we can see from earth.

5 The moon phase we see depends on the positions of the moon, Earth, and the sun, which determines how much of the sunlit side of the moon faces Earth.

7 So, as the moon makes its monthly journey around the earth, the side of the moon reflecting the sunlight is viewed from different angles.
