Apostle’s Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell, The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Catholic Church; The communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen

Today’s Psalm Reading by Hong Bong Kim Psalms 60 1 You have rejected us, O God, and burst forth upon us; you have been angry-now restore us! 2 You have shaken the land and torn it open; mend its fractures, for it is quaking. 3 You have shown your people desperate times; you have given us wine that makes us stagger. 4 But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow. Selah 5 Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered. 6 God has spoken from his sanctuary: 'In triumph I will parcel out Shechem and measure off the Valley of Succoth. 7 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet, Judah my scepter. 8 Moab is my washbasin, upon Edom I toss my sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph.' 9 Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom?

Today’s Psalm Reading by Hong Bong Kim Psalms 60 10 Is it not you, O God, you who have rejected us and no longer go out with our armies? 11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless. 12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

Today’s Prayer Prayer by Hong Bong Kim

Today’s verses Acts 4 1 The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. 3 They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand. 5 The next day the rulers, elders and teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and the other men of the high priest's family.

Today’s verses Acts 4 7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: 'By what power or what name did you do this?' 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: 'Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 He is " 'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.‘

Today’s verses Acts 4 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.' 13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. 16 'What are we going to do with these men?' they asked. 'Everybody living in Jerusalem knows they have done an outstanding miracle, and we cannot deny it.

Today’s verses Acts 4 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn these men to speak no longer to anyone in this name.' 18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God. 20 For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.' 21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

Today’s verses Acts 4 23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. 'Sovereign Lord,' they said, 'you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: " 'Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One.' 27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.

Today’s verses Acts 4 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.' 31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. 32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.

Today’s verses Acts 4 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. 34 There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need. 36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet.

How to Handle Persecution: Part I Acts 4:1-12 He is " 'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.‘ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.'

Introduction: Persecution Persecution has been always intrinsic part of Christian picture. Persecution was a blessing to the apostolic church just as it is a blessing to all churches and all believers. In early times, beginning with Stephen’s death, many Christians have been killed, tortured, etc. However, persecution is subtle today. Satan usually directs the persecution today at the ego. Satan directs his persecution at pride or acceptance or status, etc. This is really very effective. While the church today is not being killed physically, the church has succumbed to a kind of living spiritual death.

1 The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. Pharisees Political people Sadducees – only the written law was binding. – there was no resurrection of the body. – the existence of angels and spirits and the spirit world was a myth. – they believed that man was the master of his own destiny.

2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. They were upset that – they were teaching – They are not professionals. – They preached Jesus. – they preached through Jesus, the resurrection,

3 They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand. So, they reacted – Persecution began. Imprisoning the apostles didn't prevent the progress of the gospel. – It has brought it growth. – Persecution always results in growth

Seven principles for meeting persecution. Be submissive to persecution (Acts 4:7). Peter and John didn't resist arrest, because they saw in it God's great opportunity. They knew that their arrest was in God's hands. They had been obedient in the proclamation, they would be submissive in the arrest, assuming that their obedience had brought them to that point where God wanted them to be.

Seven principles for meeting persecution. Be filled with the Spirit (Acts 4:8) The filling of the Spirit is not the result of lengthy prayer. It is not the result of an emotional experience. It is not the result of some kind of a highly exciting spiritual activity. The filling of the Spirit is simply when a believer walks in obedience to the word and the Spirit. Peter had already taken the steps to be Spirit filled because he was obedient.

Seven principles for meeting persecution. Boldly they used as an opportunity (Acts 4:8). Filled with the Spirit, Peter uses the persecution as an opportunity for a bolder testimony. Instead of getting persecuted and then falling apart, he just says “well, let me tell you what it was that I was saying so that you will really clearly understand it.” “I said Jesus is Messiah and you crucified Him. And God had to raise Him again from the dead.”

Conclusion Never, never, never accommodate the gospel by deleting what offends somebody. People always say, “you can get saved a lot of ways.” Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life, and no man comes unto the Father, but by me." There is no other name. There is no salvation than any other. There is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. People always accuse Christians of being narrow. The word of God is the most narrow book ever written. It's always right and never wrong and anything that contradicts it is wrong.

Conclusion So, when you face persecution… Be submissive to persecution Be filled with the Spirit Boldly use it as an opportunity to preach the gospel. That's the first three ways to be victorious over persecution.

This Week’s Verse But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand. (Acts 4:4)

Next Week’s Verse He is " 'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.‘ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.' (Acts 4:11-12)

Today’s phrase Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and the other men of the high priest's family. ______________ was there, and so were _______, ___________, ___________ and ______________. By what power or what name did you do this? By what ______________ did you do this?

This Week’s Conversation A. Do you read the Bible often? B. Yes, sometimes. A. I tried to read but many times I don’t understand the whole picture. B. I know what you mean. Sometimes it’s hard to grasp the big picture when I’m reading a chapter. A. I think that’s why we need to understand the big picture before we can understand each book and each passage. B. I agree. So, that’s why I’m happy that we finished The Big Picture lesson book in our NIV English Bible Class. A. Me, too. Now, I can see the big picture!

Next Week’s Conversation A: Did you know that we are facing great persecutions today? B: Really? I don’t see it around me. I know the early Christians were physically persecuted and many died during the persecutions. A: Today, persecutions come in different form. In more subtle ways. It used be that if you were a Christian, you would be killed. Nowadays, if you are a Christian, you could lose a job or be excluded from the mainstream. B: I see what you mean. I agree that nowadays I don’t see much of physical persecutions, but rather there are invisible persecutions that really affect my decision to proclaim gospel. A: That’s right! We really need to stay alert and be ready for these invisible persecutions. B: Let’s study the Bible more and learn how to handle persecution.

Today’s pop quiz How should we handle persecution? 1. Be subversive to persecution 2. Be filled with the Spirit 3. Boldly deny it as an opportunity to preach the gospel. 4. Be filled with the suffering

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. (Matthew 6:9-13)
