 I’m Sayra Isabel Serrano-Villegas, I’m 15 years old, and I’m part of the class of 2017! I am currently class president. By the end of this year I will have played 3 sports for the school, basketball, track & field, and soccer. I’m part of the band and the drumline (prior bass, future snare) I volunteer outside of school at my church as a catechist's assistant and translator; I’m fluent in English and Spanish. I also volunteer at the animal shelter twice a month.

 I’m active- Sports, band, Stu. Co., volunteer work. The day that I don’t have something to do after school will be the day that I have a heart attack, actually the world might even end.  I’m charismatic. People know me, they’re comfortable with me. I feel like people can come up to me and express their opinions on things going on in the school that I could have a chance at fixing if I was voted class president.  I have a good work ethic, I spend anywhere from 10-14 hours of my day at school working on one thing or another. When I get home I spend an average of 2 hours doing homework. I never leave a project hanging, I make sure I can follow through with everything I start. Every project we do will be done right.  I’m confident, I rarely ever shy away from something. Even if I know I’ll embarrass my self doing it. Which I believe is one of the most important leadership qualities there is.  I’m a positive person. When there’s hardship it’s truly hard for me to not see the good that could come of it. I have the ability to aspire for a better tomorrow. Positivity is something that my generation lacks.  And most importantly, I have a sense of humor. When something goes wrong or somebody is in a bad mood I have the ability to boost their moral, which is very important in order to have a productive team.

 I think student council is basically the head of the student body. We are here, not only to lead everyone else, but to make sure that everyone has a good time!  We are here to make sure that the people’s voice is heard, that their opinions and ideas are heard.  Contrary to others, I don’t think Stu. Co. should be composed of the elite of the class but of the people willing to work hard. Student council members should be diverse in order to be able to reach out to all the individuals in the school.

 I was in Stu. Co. seventh grade year. I was president of the outreach program in which I planned different fundraisers for CMS.  This year I was class president. I helped plan and build the freshman class homecoming float an banner. I also helped decorate for the homecoming, father- daughter/ mother-son, and court warming dances.  I would say that overall I had a pretty good year in student council. I think I was a good leader, I tried to help as much as possible and was able to lead the rest of the freshmen class student council to win 2 nd place in the homecoming float contest and first place in the banner contest. Which I definitely couldn’t have done without the help of my classmates both Stu. Co. members or not! I gained a lot of experience as president and I think I would be able to use that experience to my advantage in order to have an even better year to come!

 The most stressful Stu. Co. situation I was part of was definitely the building of the homecoming float. It was SO hard to get everything to go well. Everything was a disaster, the plans weren’t realistic, the money (although budgeted correctly) was not there when needed, and it felt like everyone was working on something different. I feel like I had some kind of realization because I clearly remember the moment at which my panic reached its climax and I thought ‘oh my goodness, not only is my name on this, but the classes’ name is on it too’. Thinking back on that day I realize that my leadership skills were not quite as ‘people friendly’ as they normally are and although I have apologized to all the people that I yelled at, I still wish that I could go back and do it again. Although sadly, time travel is not yet possible time does go by and thankfully there will be another homecoming next year which I’ll most definitely be part of in some way. It was stressful, I broke a sweat, cried once, and I hammered my fingers twice. You could literally say I put blood, sweat, and tears into that project. At the end of the second day the float was done and everyone was pretty proud of it! In the end it was very successful and we are all very proud of it!

 I’m a student athlete! I play basketball for the freshman team, I’m starting five, I’m a leader on the court. I play soccer, I’m a goalie which is a very important position, the hardest position if I do say so myself. I haven’t played competitive soccer since 4 th grade which means that I have to work extra hard in order to better myself for the years to come. I’m the 2 nd best female thrower on the track team. I’ve always been a leader in some way or another. In fact I feel that I’m a leader all year round in some sport or activity which gives me experience in order to lead in student council.

 There’s no doubt that The Class of 2017 is full of intelligent, talented, attractive, diverse, well-rounded individuals. As class president I would make it my priority to listen and communicate the student bodies’ voice. I would place boxes that people could put notes in on things we need to work on around the school.  I would make it my priority to make it easier for kids to participate in volunteer work and fundraisers. As a class, many (if not most of us) don’t have the resources that the upperclassmen have with their cars and jobs. I would try to plan bi-monthly events that anyone and everyone could participate in to help the community.

 I believe we should seal off the lower floor of the school and fill it with water, creating a beautiful, state of the art aquarium. We could organize fundraisers such as bake sales and pie eating contests to raise money in order to buy manatees, dolphins, and other marine life. I know that we probably won’t be able to raise enough money with the prior mentioned tactics, so if I get the position of class president I am willing to sell my liver, a kidney, and any other non-essential organs in order to get the money to make this dream come true. After the aquarium is built the school will not only be a teaching facility, but an aquarium. We could then charge people to come watch the animals to bring in money. That’s a win-win situation if I’ve ever seen one.
