“2012 Legacies for Learning” A project to develop Open Educational Resources related to the Olympic and Paralympic Games The aim of the project is: o to identify, develop as necessary, make accessible and promote Open Educational Resources which can support higher education programmes in engaging students in learning through opportunities afforded by the Olympic and Paralympic Games and their legacy; o resources which derive from all phases of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, from planning to post-Games evaluation of impact will be highlighted.

Rational- Why the 2012 Project The project is important for the following reasons: o Ignoring the sporting context to the Olympics and Paralympics, there is scope to permeate HLST and other subjects; o The resources reflect the challenges facing the modern world: the need to nurture a positive regard for competition whilst encouraging a spirit and ethos of interdependence and cooperation; o Build on the emerging body of knowledge and skills in events management; o Universal and global nature of the Olympics;

Objectives of the Project o To identify learning resources related to the Olympics and Paralympics which already exist and which can be made available for wider application and use; o To identify and collate other materials available in the public domain which are related to the planning, delivery and legacy of the 2012 and other Games and which can be used as resources for student learning in a range of subject areas and at different levels; o To identify and clarify the Intellectual Property Rights of the selected resources and to obtain rights clearance where necessary; o To prepare the resources for licensing and for accessibility using open resources formats; o To release the resources through the use of web 2.0 technology and repositories and the creation of metadata descriptions.

Project Outputs The project plan outlined four categories or sources of resource to be identified; o 60 case studies and discussion starters produced for the HLST Subject Centre’s Olympics Special Interest Group edited for OER release; o A number of articles and journal papers published by Routledge made openly available; o Official documentation produced by LOCOG and the IOC relating to their activities in promoting the Olympics and Paralympics to FE and HE; o Resources illustrating the nature and impact of contemporary research related to the Olympics and Paralympics; Dissemination of materials through the 2012 Legacies for Learning web site via the 2,012 Facebook group, via Twitter, through Jorum and Radar (the Oxford Brookes University Repository).

Collaboration A key feature of the project is the liaison with other bodies and organisations: o The Olympics Special Interest Group established by the HLST Subject Centre in 2008; o Podium, Sector Skills Councils and professional bodies (the Institute of Hospitality and the Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) for their links and expertise in the topics; o Routledge for their expertise and resources; o A number of subject associations; o Consortia of HEIs in Canada and Russia linked to the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver and the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi; o HEA Engineering Subject Centre for IPR expertise and their previous project experience.

Planned Resources Initial release through RADAR (Oxford Brookes institutional repository).RADAR Case studies and discussion starters including: o Boxing Clever: What can boxing tell is about our culture and society? o Paralympic Sport: Are we equal yet? o Sustainability in Mega-event Planning: How green are the games? o Sport and Politics: Are the Olympic Games political? o London 2012: A Nutritional Legacy? o Race and Ethnicity in Olympic History. Official documents like: o Mean, Lean, Green-Olympic Park Energy Centre; o Olympic Park sustainable development; o Olympic Village London Preliminary Information memorandum; o Everyone’s Games; o Employment Skills Strategy.

Articles such as: o Why Corporations Sponsor the Olympics o SKATEBOARDING: An Interpretation of Space in the Olympic City o One hundred years of cultural programming within the Olympic Games (1912–2012): origins, evolution and projections. 10 Developments and Constraints Project name and use of the ‘O’ word o Some delays in obtaining certainty over using the word Olympic or related words. A definitive decision on this is still awaited. o Project name was originally ‘Learning Legacies 2012’ but LOCOG objected at the 11 th hour and the project name changed accordingly. Case studies and discussion starters o Clearing 3 rd party materials (images, quotes, tables of data) and formatting them to accessible standards. 60 original resources- 57 are ready to be uploaded, with the others being finalised. o Moral rights of sports people was also a consideration. o Copyright and other related issues in Nazi propaganda materials- who owns, who might object? Podium, LOCOG & the IOC documents o 22 resources have been identified, but LOCOG is reluctant to allow them to be released under CC licences. A meeting with LOCOG legal advisors will take place shortly.

Routledge o Complex ownership agreements being resolved but a list of 100 -150 articles has been provided for release with as many as 500 -1000 more following. o Freely available vs OER/CC- an on going debate. Developments o A ‘Guide to Researching the Olympics’ from Canterbury Christ Church University, plus resources to harness the rapidly growing interest in the 2012 Games, and its scope for engaging students and teachers across the HLST subjects to develop a COP. Released early June. o Discussions are also under way to release a number catering and food safety resources. o The British library are also involved in discussion to release bibliographies of their related resources too.
