2. Youth Development An approach that focuses on the developmental needs of youth within the larger framework of human development. The main goal is helping youth become socially, morally, emotionally, physically, and cognitively competent.

3. Why is Youth Development Important Today?

4. Evidence of Effectiveness Youth who have a consistent adult role model in their life do better in school. Youth involved in community service programs demonstrate academic gains. Youth involved in extra-learning opportunities perform better academically. Youth who are involved in structured activities engage in fewer risky behaviors. Youth with more personal assets commit less crime. Youth involved in programs that link academics and the world of work do better in school. Youth with good “soft” skills (e.g., ability to communicate, work in a team, problem-solve) have a greater earning potential. Youth who avoid becoming parents complete more years of schooling.

5. Challenges to Promoting Youth Development  Accountability;  Multiple service systems and multiple funding sources;  Coordination at the local level; and  Newness of the field.

6. State Actions to Promote Youth Development  Create a focal point for youth development activities;  Develop collaborative systems;  Promote shared accountability among agencies; and  Work with local governments to better integrate disparate funding streams.
