2 MAINTENANCE VS. TROUBLESHOOTING Computer maintenance is the process of routinely “updating” your computer so that it performs optimally. Computer troubleshooting is the process of trying to solve a “problem” that is occurring with your computer.

3 MAINTENANCE VS. TROUBLESHOOTING: EXAMPLES Computer Maintenance:  Updating your operating system  Updating your software programs (MS Word, PowerPoint, Photoshop, etc.)  Updating your Internet browser  Removing old programs  Defragmenting the disk Computer Troubleshooting:  Pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete to end a task because the program is “frozen”  Fixing a paper jam in a printer  Replacing a printer cartridge  Running anti-virus software

4 WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT? Maintenance is important because it enables your computer to perform in the best manner possible.  Without maintenance, your computer would run much more slowly than it would otherwise. Troubleshooting allows you to continue using your computer. When your computer or a program “freezes” you need to be able to effectively solve the problem so that you can complete your task.
