In the implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) industry, two factors drive growth – advances in technology and clinical trials that expand the pool of treatable patients. Of the two, technological advances are disproportionately important. Several important clinical trials were conducted from 1996: MADIT (1996), AVID (1997), MUSTT (1999), MADIT II (2002), COMPANION (2003), DEFINITE (2003), SCD-HeFT(2003). The most important technological advancement in the early period was the introduction of dual-chambered ICDs in the fall of 1997. The big growth driver in the recent years was the 2002 launch of the biventricular pacing (cardiac resynchronization) ICD (CRT-Ds).
