HELLO, BLOCK 2 NURSING STUDENTS! Ann Roselle Librarian

Evidence-Based Nursing

First Step What type of question am I trying to answer? Background QuestionForeground Question Who, what, when, why, where, or how Best practice question Single disease, drug, intervention, concept Asks for general knowledge Broad For example, What are the causes of migraines? To inform clinical decisions or actions - Specific to the clinical case (patient) Often compares two interventions Asks for specific knowledge More refined/focused For example, In middle aged women with migraines, is there any evidence that acupuncture compared to relaxation training reduces the frequency of migraines?

Second Step Where is the best place to start my research (evidence)?

Two Most Important PC Library Webpages for You 1. Nursing Research LibGuide PC Library > Class Guides > NUR Nursing Research LibGuide 2. Nursing Databases PC Library > Databases by Subject > Nursing Nursing Databases

Real Life Research How to... Eliminate ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) Decrease hospital acquired pressure ulcers in the ICU Decrease the need for peripheral IV restarts Negate compassion fatigue in acute care nurses Prevent catheter associated urinary tract infections (CA-UTI) Improve immunization practices Real research question: Does early patient mobilization affect length of stay and patient outcomes?

Learning Objectives By the end of today’s session, you will be able to: Use PICO to breakdown a clinical question in order to search effectively. Construct a search in PubMed with PICO keywords in order to locate relevant research. Understand the use of Journal Finder in order to locate full-text research articles. Describe “Level of Evidence.”

PICO P Population/Patient/ Problem Who or what? (How would you describe a group of patients similar to yours?) IIntervention How? (Which main intervention, prognostic factor, or exposure are you considering?) C Comparison What is the main alternative? (optional) OOutcome What are you trying to accomplish, measure, improve, or affect?

P Population/Patient/ Problem Pregnant women with type 1 diabetes IIntervention Insulin pump therapy CComparison Conventional insulin therapy OOutcome Improved management of glucose levels Clinical case: A pregnant woman with type 1 diabetes is concerned about the effect her current treatment may have on her pregnancy and unborn child. You've heard that insulin pump therapy may be a more successful treatment than conventional insulin therapy. Clinical question (want you want to answer): Are insulin pumps more effective than conventional therapies in managing type 1 diabetes in pregnant women?

Keywords for Your Search diabetes AND pregnancy AND "insulin pump" AND "insulin injections" OR “type 1 diabetes” AND pregnancy AND "insulin infusion systems" AND = combines search words “Quotation Marks”= phrase searching (WARNING! - Don’t use phrase searching in PubMed)

Nursing Research LibGuide Library > Class Guides > NUR

Need Help? 1.P = hip replacement I = patient controlled analgesia C = intramuscular injection 2. P = older patients I = vitamin D supplementation O = reduce falls 3. P = critically ill I = disposable bath C = traditional bath O=hygiene

Journal Finder Shows which PC Library Database contains full-text articles
