2 UB LIS 571 Soergel Lecture 9.2b In-lecture exercise: Retrieval access and hierarchy Dagobert Soergel Department of Library and Information Studies Graduate School of Education University at Buffalo Includes audio. 20 min

3 How to use these slides repeated The lecture or exercise is divided into segments listed on Slide 3. Many slides have audio. To start the audio: Mouse over the speaker icon. A familiar play-back control bar appears. Click on ► to start, click on || to pause. Other slides have just instructions or are just to read or direct you to read something. If you do not have MS PowerPoint 2010 or later (also available for Mac), get it free from UB IT. 2

5 Introduction 4 Objectives: Further solidify understanding of inclusive search. Task Analyze retrieval behavior of six documents, see next slide for detail. Materials Faceted classification of transportation, Lecture Notes p. 362 – 363 Take these two pages out of your ring binder Examples on Lecture Notes p. 365 - 368 to use as a workbook On most of the following slides, the audio will start automatically.

6 Task (copied from Lecture Notes, p. 365) 5 Starting on Slide 7 are six documents which were indexed in the request- oriented approach you used in Assignment 11. Each descriptor is on a separate line. Using the hierarchy of the Faceted classification of transportation, do the following: 1For each descriptor (index term), list the descriptor(s) under which the document should be found on the basis of this index term. 2Give some query formulations retrieving the document. The query formulations should illustrate how a search for a combination of two broad concepts finds documents indexed by more specific concepts. Document 1 on the next slide gives a worked-out example
