Industrial Factors Affecting Design Mr.T
2
The Big Idea The “Industrial Designers Society of America” (IDSA) offers the most current standards to guide product designs by engineering design teams in all industries.

What is the IDSA? IDSA Website

Gallery Walk A collection of ‘cell phones’ from a wide variety of manufacturers and many older designs mixed with current designs will be gathered and placed at various tables throughout the classroom. Students are to simply visit each table and inspect the phone, making notes about various physical features for each. Students are encouraged to be comprehensive in their review. Once all students have reviewed each phone, they create at least five categories for organizing their observations. This approach allows them to differentiate among numerous descriptors and organize them under appropriate and more generalized headings. Share your findings and final five organizers with the class.

Examples Cell phone technology benefits significantly from industrial design criteria from ‘IDSA.’ These phones represent only five years of design changes. (See Student Resource 1.3.2 - Cell Phone Technology)

To continue a discussion of cell phones and the impact of critically thinking about key design features is represented by the chart below. This information depicts a rating for specific features for the StarTAC cell phone. Students are challenged to conduct a similar survey with features they feel are important and survey a few classes to obtain responses from potential customers and compare those results with the ones presented below. (See Student Resource 1.3.3 - Product Survey Sample)

Project Many large companies have internal industrial design departments. Smaller companies will usually contract Industrial Design (ID) services with consulting firms. All companies strive to address all design features using a formal process. Usually, this process involves the following: Investigation of customer needs Conceptualization Preliminary refinement Concept selection Control drawings Coordination with engineering, manufacturing and vendors. Using this process as a model, students are to address each step and present a new version of a cell phone design that they feel is appealing. A final control drawing such as the one for the StarTAC phone below should be completed using available CADD software. (See Student Resource 1.3.4 - StarTAC control drawing) (If available a 3-D rendering of the final design should be completed. If a rapid- prototyping or 3-D printer is available, the final design can be modeled full scale.)
