4 More Land * 13 states were formed from the area purchased. Gained Florida from Spain in 1819. *More land would be gained from Spain

5 Ah, Home!

6 Deep in the heart of Texas * Texas was a Spanish territory. Won independence in the Battle of San Jacinto. Became a Republic after defeating the Spanish armies. *Became state in 1845.

7 I Think I Know That Place

8 The Spoils of War *United States beat Mexico in 1848. * Received California, Utah, and Nevada in a treaty. * Parts of Colorado, Arizona, Wyoming, and New Mexico too.

10 Keep Growing *Treaty with Great Britain gave Oregon, Washington, and Idaho as well as parts of Montana and Wyoming. * James Gadsen gave Mexico $10 million dollars for southern New Mexico and Arizona.
