1 Warehouse Safety Is This You????

2 Warehouse Safety 50% of injuries occur in the storage area
65% of injuries from manually lifting, carrying, or handling materials. 30% during unloading vehicles / trucks

3 WORKING ON A LOADING DOCK
Warehouse Safety WORKING ON A LOADING DOCK Block trailer wheels Secure the dock plate – Don’t Speed Ensure correct dock plate positioning

4 -----WORKING ON A LOADING DOCK----
Warehouse Safety -----WORKING ON A LOADING DOCK---- Visual Warnings at leading edges Ensure trailer floor is stable and has proper load rating. Load should face uphill when negotiating an incline.

5 --------Hand Truck Use ---------
Warehouse Safety Hand Truck Use Keep hands & feet clear. Don’t exceed mfg’s load capacity. Secure the load ALWAYS strap pressurized items.

6 Warehouse Safety Use a spotter if view is obstructed.
Keep center of gravity low. Push the load, don’t walk backwards. On incline, keep the hand truck in front. Store hand trucks with the tongue under a pallet, shelf, table, etc.

7 ------Pallet Jack Use ------
Warehouse Safety ------Pallet Jack Use Trained operators only. Don’t exceed the load capacity. Start and stop slowly. Pull pallet jacks except when Going down an incline. Use a spotter if view is blocked.

8 Warehouse Safety Stop for people or obstructions.
Don’t get your feet under the pallet jack. Make turns slowly. Wear the required PPE. NEVER ride on pallet jacks.

9 ------Material Handling & Storage------
Warehouse Safety ------Material Handling & Storage------ Position materials to be shelved in front to avoid twisting. Look for sharp objects. Bend nails or staples before unpacking. Don’t kick objects from the walkway.

10 Warehouse Safety Never let items overhang from shelves into walkways.
Slow when approaching blind corners. Heavier loads on lower shelves. Remove one object at a time. Put items on shelves flat.

11 Warehouse Safety ------- Powered Industrial Trucks -----
Don’t Use the Forklift If: Broken or cracked weld points on the mast. Roller tracks or chains in poor condition. Forks unequally spaced / Cracks along the blade / forks or at the heels. Hydraulic fluid levels low or reservoirs leaking. Hydraulic lines / fittings worn or crimped. Lift or tilt cylinders leaking. Cylinder hardware loose. Tires excessively worn / split; Excessive rubber missing. Improper air pressure for inflatable tires. Battery / cables in poor condition.

12 -------- Driving a Forklift -------
Warehouse Safety Driving a Forklift Obey traffic rules Proper ground clearance for forks Drive at proper speeds (walking pace) Slow in congested areas Observe ceiling heights or doorway heights NEVER drive up to a person standing in front of a wall. Never drive along an unguarded edge of loading dock. Keep distance from other operating mobile equipment ( 3 lengths) Vision blocked – drive in reverse – use a signal person. Look in direction of travel

13 -------- Driving a Forklift -------
Warehouse Safety Driving a Forklift Never drive a forklift while a person is in a man-lift platform. Unloaded forklift – reverse going up ramp / forward going down ramp Loaded forklift – forward going up ramp / reverse going down ramp NEVER turn around on a ramp NEVER shift to reverse to slow or stop Parking – lower the mast completely turn off the engine set the parking brake

14 -------- Loading Docks -------
Warehouse Safety Loading Docks When vehicle is backing, keep the forklift clear of dock edge. NEVER begin loading / unloading until the vehicle has: Come to a complete stop Engine off Dock plate in place WHEELS ARE CHOCKED Never drive into the truck until the dock plate is attached Never drive a forklift into a trailer with “soft” or loose decking

15 -------- Loading Docks -------
Warehouse Safety Loading Docks Drive straight across the dock plate when entering / exiting the trailer Use lights when working in dark trailer

16 -------- Working Around Forklifts -------
Warehouse Safety Working Around Forklifts Most training addresses operators and not co-workers Unauthorized people in work area Co-workers sustain more injuries and fatalities than operators

17 -------- Working Around Forklifts -------
Warehouse Safety Working Around Forklifts ALWAYS establish eye contact ALWAYS keep a safe distance from the machine NEVER assume the forklift operator knows you are there. MAKE your self known WATCH out for the tail swing when a forklift turns STAY CLEAR of the fall zone CHECK the mirrors installed at corners NEVER walk under the raised forks.

18 ----------- Fire Safety --------
Warehouse Safety Fire Safety Store materials 18 inches below sprinkler heads Maintain clear access to all fire extinguishers and fire alarm panels. Fire extinguishers identified with proper signs Prevent accumulation of trash and debris Designated area for storage of pallets Limit pallet height to 6 feet Make sure isles are free of obstructions

19 ----------- Fire Safety --------
Warehouse Safety Fire Safety Emergency lights are functional Extension cords are not to be used as permanent wiring. Store flammable liquids properly Never store materials in front of electrical panels or in electrical rooms
