2 Election and Term of Office (House) Every two years voters elect their member of the House of Representatives. Every member of the House of Representatives serves a two year term.

3 Election and Term of Office (Continued) The Constitution does not limit the number of terms that a representative may serve.

4 Qualifications (House) To serve in the House of Representatives the following qualifications must be met: 1.Must be at least 25 years of age 2.Must be a citizen of the United States for at least 7 years 3.Must be a resident of the state that he/she represents

5 Members of the House of Representatives The number of members of the House of Representatives is fixed at 435. It has been set at 435 since Congress made this law in 1929. The number of Congressional Representatives that a state has is based upon its population as determined by census. The census is taken every ten years.

6 Members of the House of Representatives Continued As of the 2000 census, the average population per Congressional district is 646, 946. California has the most members of the House of Representatives (53).

7 Members of the House of Representatives Continued Alaska, Delaware, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming each have 1 member of the House. Tennessee has 9 members of the House of Representatives.

8 Oak Ridge, Tennessee Oak Ridge is located in the 3 rd Tennessee Congressional District. Congressman Chuck Fleischmann is the representative of the 3 rd Congressional District of Tennessee.

10 House Leadership The Speaker of the House is chosen by the majority party of the House of Representatives. The Speaker of the House is third in the line of Presidential succession. The Speaker is in charge of the House of Representatives.

11 The Speaker of the House Congressman John Boehner of Ohio (Republican) is the current speaker of the House of Representatives.

12 House Majority and Minority Leaders These individuals are also referred to as the Floor Leaders of their respective parties. The job of these individuals is to ensure that the laws passed by Congress are in the best interest of the country and their own political party.

14 House Minority Leader Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi of California

15 Party Whips The job of the whip is to assist the majority leader (floor leader) by keeping track of how party members vote and to persuade all members of his or her party to vote together on issues.

17 House Minority Whip Congressman Steny Hoyer of Maryland (Democrat)
