Mechanical Definitions & Equations Terms we need to know Equations we need to know

Your Job! Your job will be to read… 276 281 Page 276 to 281 in the Science Focus 8 Textbook and 280 285 288 to 289 Pages 280 to 285 and 288 to 289 in the Science in Action 8 Textbook copy down the definitions and equations (written & abbreviated with only one equals sign per line) listed on the last slide

Before you go!!! The textbook will give examples of equations similar to this If you exert a force of 50 N while pushing your bike up a ramp that is 4m long… how much work have you done? NOT Do NOT write out your answers or show your work like this W = F x d = 50 N x 4 m = 200 Nm

How to Write an Equation! Follow the Three Line Method!! Step One That will get you 1 mark Always write the equation you will be using in its abbreviated form. That will get you 1 mark W = F x d

How to Write an Equation! Step Two That will also get you 1 mark Plug the known numbers into the appropriate variable position. That will also get you 1 mark W = F x d W = 50 N x 4 m Don’t forget the units!!

How to Write an Equation! Step Three That will get you 1 mark Now do the Calculations one step at a time to find the answer. That will get you 1 mark W = F x d W = 50 N x 4 m W = 200 J Don’t forget the units for marks!!!

Once Again… Your Job! Your job will be to read… 276 to 281 Page 276 to 281 in the Science Focus 8 Textbook and 280 to 285 288 to 289 Pages 280 to 285 and 288 to 289 in the Science in Action 8 Textbook Make sure you put definitions into your own words… this is your chance to prove that you can handle “Self Directed Learning”

Self Directed Learning It will be up to you to create your notes to study from. You will only do as well on the quiz as you do on these readings/notes This is known as “Self Directed Learning” and it’s something that you will be ask to do more and more often in high school.

Definitions & Equations Work (and units Joules… “J”) Written and Abbreviated Equation for “Work” (Include example question with solution with 1 equals sign per line) Written and Abbreviated Equation for “Work” (Include example question with solution with 1 equals sign per line) Mechanical Advantage Input Force Output Force Written & Abbreviated Equation for “Mechanical Advantage” (Include example question with solution with 1 equals sign per line) Written & Abbreviated Equation for “Mechanical Advantage” (Include example question with solution with 1 equals sign per line) Speed Ratio Written & Abbreviated Equation for “Speed Ratio” (Include example question with solution with 1 equals sign per line) Written & Abbreviated Equation for “Speed Ratio” (Include example question with solution with 1 equals sign per line) Friction Efficiency Written and Abbreviated Equation for “Efficiency” (Include example question with solution with 1 equals sign per line) Written and Abbreviated Equation for “Efficiency” (Include example question with solution with 1 equals sign per line)
