2 The Centre Lathe. A machine tool used within engineering for shaping, cutting & producing features on predominantly round metal sections. Reducing diameters in size Turning stepped diameters Drilling & boring Undercuts and recesses Internal & external threads Tapers Can machine irregular shaped objects

Headstock – includes gearbox, speed & feed selectors. Carriage includes compound slide, tool post, saddle, apron & traverse controls. Emergency stop

Image taken: users.tpg.com.au Carrier – transmits drive to work piece. Catch plate with drive dog/peg to provide drive to carrier. Headstock end of lathe. Work piece. Work piece is secured at other end with centre and tailstock. Dead centre located in machine spindle.

Image taken: Work piece clamped to slots in face plate. Face plate attached to machine spindle. Irregular shaped objects can be secured and turned. Face plates also allow eccentric turning (off centre).
