3 INTERNAL (WITHIN CMC) RESUME Sprinkle “System” language through resume and cover letter. (Bring cover letter to interview with copies of resume.) 4 OBJECTIVE STATEMENT VS. QUALIFICATIONS SUMMARY /PROFILE Optional How can you best market yourself? Can be the most difficult part of the resume to write, so you may want to save it for last.

5 CHALLENGE: What if you have no healthcare work experience?

6 WHAT ABOUT… “Out of the ordinary” clinical skills Clinical shadowing experiences Volunteering in clinical settings Memberships in professional organizations Clinical recognition WOW cards Testimonials from patients

7 BUT… Don’t tell your audience something they already know. Clinical rotations Basic skills

8 Why is waitressing good experience, and what are transferrable skills?

9 Resumes on Information Portal are food for thought, not templates you are expected to follow. Do a web search for other ideas. See Expert Resumes for Health Care Careers and other resources in the Student Success Center (moved to 254.)

10 EDUCATION SECTION Do not list high school education. Our CCHS nursing diploma reads: Associate of Applied Science In Nursing Resume: Associate of Applied Science, Nursing Similarly:Bachelor of Arts, Music Bachelor of Science, Biology If in doubt, check diploma/certificate of completion.

11 Most students will use reverse chronological order. However Functional organization style or combined chronological/functional will be best for some.

12 USE BULLETS FOR JOB FUNCTIONS Begin each bullet with an action verb (see Resume Power Words). Focus on transferrable skills. Minimize articles (a/an/the). Work to keep each bulleted function to one line.

13 ONE PAGE OR TWO? WHAT TO INCLUDE? The critical consideration is relevance.

14 Final section can be entitled what you wish: Certifications/ Awards Community Service/ Memberships Honors

15 Show your resume to as many people as possible for feedback – especially experienced and observant ones!

16 BECAUSE YOU ARE WAGING A WIDE JOB SEARCH: Tailor your resume to the employer for which it is intended. Is it for printed or electronic submission?
