Investigation 2: Part 2 Making a Motor Run

Engaging Scenario There are two main types of pencil sharpeners—hand crank and electric. What is the difference between these sharpeners? Which one do you think works the best? Why?

Equipment Inventory Electric motorD-cell

Equipment Inventory Circuit baseSwitch

Equipment Inventory Wires Lightbulb in holder

Focus Question How can you get electricity from a D-cell to this receiver (motor)? My Science Notebook 2012-2013 Name:____________________ Grade Level:_______________

Prediction I think that we can ___________________. My Science Notebook 2012-2013 Name:____________________ Grade Level:_______________

Data/Observations Make a technical drawing in your notebooks that shows how to get electricity from a D-cell to the motor. My Science Notebook 2012-2013 Name:____________________ Grade Level:_______________

IRFQ I claim that _____________ because _____________. My Science Notebook 2012-2013 Name:____________________ Grade Level:_______________

Making Meaning Conference

Schematic Drawings When electricians and electrical engineers record their circuits, they use drawings called schematic diagrams. They use symbols that are easy to draw for the components (bulbs, wires, and batteries). This is the symbol for bulb. You can see that it looks a little like a filament inside a bulb. They symbol for a motor is a circle with the letter M inside. Symbols for the other components we have been using are shown in the lower left hand corner of your Drawings and Schematics sheet.

Schematic Drawing Now, make a schematic diagram of the circuits you drew earlier. My Science Notebook 2012-2013 Name:____________________ Grade Level:_______________

Vocabulary A circuit base holds many components needed to build a circuit. A Fahnstock clip is a metal clip that connects wires in a circuit. A switch is a device used to open and close circuits. My Science Notebook 2012-2013 Name:____________________ Grade Level:_______________

Vocabulary An open circuit is an incomplete circuit through which electricity will not flow. A closed circuit is a complete circuit through which electricity flows. A schematic diagram is a way to represent a circuit on a piece of paper. My Science Notebook 2012-2013 Name:____________________ Grade Level:_______________

Conclusion I learned that… Remember to use correct scientific vocabulary My Science Notebook 2012-2013 Name:____________________ Grade Level:_______________

Reflection I wonder… My Science Notebook 2012-2013 Name:____________________ Grade Level:_______________
