19 Cattle Herd Expectations for 2009 Total cattle numbers down 1.6 percent or 1.54 million head, totaling 94.5 million head on Jan 1 2009. –Smaller than the recent low in 2004 and the smallest herd since 1959. Input costs have increased faster than prices; squeezing margins: crude +156%, pasture land +135%, corn +132%, nitrogen +128%, hay +90%, 550# steer +12% comparing prices in 2000 to those in 2008 In 2000, the annual cash cost/cow was $294/hd but in 2008 costs were estimated at $436/cow!! 64 Declining Cattle Inventory in Canada All cattle and calves in Canada as of January 1, 2009, totaled 13.2 million head, down 5 percent from the 13.9 million on January 1, 2008 All cows and heifers that have calved, at 5.63 million, was down 6 percent from the 5.97 million on January 1, 2008– fourth year of liquidation! Combined North America decline of 1.02 million head of beef cows All cattle and calves in the U.S. and Canada combined totaled 107.7 million head on January 1, 2009, down 2 percent from a year ago. 67 May Agricultural Prices Compared with a year ago, prices are higher for broilers. Prices are down from last year for milk, cattle, hogs, eggs, turkeys, and calves. Meat Animals: The May index, at 109, is down 0.9 percent from last month and 11 percent lower than last year. –The May hog price, at $44.20 per cwt, is up 10 cents from April but $11.10 lower than a year ago. –The May beef cattle price of $82.80 per cwt is down 70 cents from last month and $8.50 lower than May 2008.

68 May Agricultural Prices Dairy Products: The May index, at 90, is down 1.1 percent from a month ago and 36 percent lower than May last year. –The May all milk price of $11.70 per cwt is down 20 cents from last month and $6.60 from May 2008. Poultry & Eggs: The May index, at 142, is up 0.7 percent from April but 4.7 percent below a year ago. –The May broiler price, at 49.0 cents per pound, is up 4.0 cents from April and 1.0 cent above a year ago.

69 May Agricultural Prices Feed Grains & Hay: The May index is 177, up 5.4 percent from last month but 22 percent below a year ago. –The corn price, at $4.08 per bushel, is up 23 cents from last month but $1.19 below May 2008. –The all hay price, at $131 per ton, is up $2.00 from April but down $37.00 from last May.
