The Space Race

From Sputnik to the Moon Sputnik, and the fears associated with it, prompted the United States to enter a space race with the Soviet Union 1962: John Glenn becomes the first American astronaut to orbit Earth 1969: the mission Apollo 11 lands the first man in history to walk on the moon

Spinoff Technologies In the race to space, NASA developed many technologies we rely on and use today. In this sense, the nuclear arms race indirectly led to good developments for society. Such “spin-off” technologies occupy every aspect of our daily lives

Sports Athletic shoes utilize materials developed for spacesuits. Fitness equipment for astronauts is used for some athletic purposes and physical therapy. “Cool suits” worn during moon walks are adapted for race car drivers.

Your home Many forms of insulation were developed by NASA Some food packaging, to keep food warm or cold, originated from the space program Freeze-dried foods were used to feed astronauts, and are used today to increase shelf life Water filters used on spacecraft can be mounted on your faucet

Your community Pipelines that carry oil are insulated with space-race insulation Community filtration systems and cooling towers use Apollo technology to kill bacteria and purify water Fire-resistant clothing developed for Apollo is now used by firefighters NASA’s water recycling process was adapted for dialysis, a process that helps individuals with some medical conditions
