SUBJECTS AND PREDICATES Simple vs. Complete

Complete... The complete subject is the group of words about which something is being said. The complete predicate is the group of words which say something about the subject.

Examples of Complete Subjects On rainy mornings, is your bus usually late? In the desk were the red pencils. Do your parents mind your getting home late?

Examples of Complete Predicates Douglas had thoroughly scrubbed the dingy walls. My aunt was sitting on the sofa. Many writers’ first novels are autobiographical.

Simple... The simple subject is the main word or group of words in the complete subject. The simple predicate is the verb or verb phrase.

Examples of Simple Subjects Do your parents mind your getting home late? Successful executives budget their time wisely. The venturous Langston Hughes called his autobiography The Big Sea.
